The blurb from the publisher…

After an unfortunate incident and a forced leave of absence from the Secret Service, Arden Ryan is moving back to Chicago where she can get over her failures in the comfort of her childhood home. Her parents, who are lovely, if not a tad overbearing, will provide the support she needs. Healing is hard, though, and when she’s prodded by her best friend to get back out there, Arden reluctantly takes a job guarding one of Hollywood’s leading ladies, Evelyn Glass.

Evelyn Glass disappeared from the silver screen unexpectedly when she decided to have a family. At least that’s what the public thinks. She’s making a comeback, though. After landing a role as the star on a top-rated television show, she feels invincible once again. As her ego starts to grow, so does her fan base, and attention, unwanted and otherwise, comes from every direction.

Evelyn and Arden butt heads at every pass. Evelyn’s desire to prove herself puts her in harm’s way more than once, until a situation occurs that put her children’s lives at risk. Her change of heart regarding not just Arden’s protection, but the attraction simmering between them, will change her entire life.

Can Arden prove her love means more to Evelyn than fame before it’s too late?

My thoughts…

I always like Erin Zak’s stories. There is just something about the characters she creates. Her leading ladies are a little bit wounded and readers are drawn to them like a moth to a flame. She develops a vulnerability in them and it tugs on the old heartstrings. Stories that engage the senses and stir sentimentalities result in immersive reading, and that’s a hallmark of Zak’s writing.

Arden Ryan plays the role of a classic “hero” in this romance and readers can’t help but like her. She’s gallant, brave and honorable, the perfect protector for Evelyn Glass. Readers connect with Arden immediately; they latch on to her journey and are there for it. They want to see her overcome her misgivings about love and lower the walls she’s built around her heart. Mostly, they want to see her accept this chance she’s been given with Evelyn. She deserves it, and so does Evelyn. Besides, they’re too hot together to even think about ignoring it.

There’s a lot of emotions zig-zagging between these two leading ladies, but that’s trademark Zak. She knows how to crank up the heat and keep everybody interested. She writes tantalizing romance, stuff fans of this genre can not turn away from. It’s not all steam though; this story has some meat on its bones. The storyline is captivating and delivers nice dollops of intrigue and mystery. All in all, it’s a solid piece of fiction that’s sure to entertain.

Final remarks…

Guarding Evelyn is a rousing read. It has everything one wants in a romance: alluring characters, steamy chemistry and an engaging plot. On top of all of that, it makes mention of some of my favorite things in Michigan—Crystal Lake and Bell’s Two Hearted Ale! I mean, seriously, is there anything better than that??

Strengths…

  • Entertaining read
  • Engaging romance
  • Likable characters
  • Intriguing plot
